The Art of Pillows

By Lindsay Wakeman

As some of you may have discovered, there are so many fabric designs out there, sometimes it can be really challenging to choose your toss pillows! However, you do not have to let the number of choices stop you from choosing something that you really love. I won’t be able to cover every single combination of pillows, but I want to show you a few of my favorites.
Your toss pillows can really tie elements in a room together, they can provide color, pattern, and texture in a room. It is shocking to see the transformation that can occur when you switch out your pillows, or add a couple extra to your sofa and accent chairs. I love the combination of pillows on this sofa by Studio McGee, she used multiple colors and patterns, and it really gives the room some character. Don’t be afraid to make a bold color and pattern choice, especially if you want to make a statement! I see these bold colors in the contemporary and transitional design styles quite often.

Another option is to keep them neutral and subtle, which is opposite of the first image. Erin Kern, founder of Cotton Stem Interiors has a beautiful sectional with neutral toss pillows. You can see that she has used neutral colors, but has a few pillows with different textures. I love this look as well, you will see a lot of this in the farmhouse/rustic style.

This next living room was done by Ashley Whittaker, and as you can see she incorporated in different shades of blue into her pillows, which helps to pick up the blue throughout the room. One element I wanted to point out was that she has the royal blue tufted chair, and she chose a pillow that had a pattern with the same shade of blue. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with pulling the color from your sofa or chair into your toss pillows. This will give you a consistency throughout your room if you choose a color to incorporate into different areas. Ashley did a beautiful job with this in her Southhampton design!

I hope that you will take some time to play around with your toss pillows if you have been thinking about making a change! You have lots of options, but like I said, don’t let that scare you. Find a color that you want to pull in your room, and incorporate that color into your pillows. The end result will look great!
