Have you ever had a hard time choosing your rug? I know I have! Area rugs can really transform your space; they can neutralize or amplify the feel and color of the room. Area rugs are multipurpose, they provide warmth, texture, pattern, and color to a space. I like to start with the floors when I am working on a new project, so choosing my rug helps me lay the foundation for the rest of the room. Now I know a lot of you probably have your furniture, and are wanting to find a rug that works with what you already have. But if you are starting fresh, I encourage you to find rugs that you like first! Just like design styles, there are rug styles as well, so I want to help you choose the best rug for your space!
First, let’s talk about choosing the right size for your rug - the last thing you want is to have a rug that isn’t to scale with your room. If you want your rug to fill the room, let’s say a living room for example, the rule of thumb is to leave no less than 6 inches and no more than 18 inches between the baseboard and the edge of the rug. If you want to place a rug under your dining table, I like to leave about 2 feet between the wall and the edge of the rug. You want to have enough space to slide your chair out without getting it caught on the edge of the rug…that could make your dinner parties go south!
Now onto the fun part, the style! If I went into each style, you would be reading for way too long. As I said, there are rugs that work well within the different design styles. Depending on the style that you are going for, you will want to choose your rug with this in mind. You have more flexibility within eclectic design, because this style incorporates all sorts of color, pattern, texture, and variety. I think you could get away with just about any style of rug within eclectic design! (Refer to the 5th image below) When it comes to the other design styles (traditional, modern, contemporary, transitional, and rustic), there are rugs that are typically paired with these styles which can be seen in the images below. Pinterest and Instagram are great resource for seeing more design styles, as most interior designers are on both. Pay attention to the rugs that are used in the styles that you like, this will help you when choosing your own!
As you look through the photos below, you can see the different styles and ways that a rug can really make your space. As I’m sure you can imagine, it would be impossible for me to show an example of every style of rug (you would be scrolling for way too long), so here are some of my favorites. Pay attention to the scale of the rugs as well, these are all fit to scale in order to make the space look the best that it can!
